So, you're looking into boudoir photography and you are excited to have this type of photo shoot done.

Awesome! Boudoir photography is an amazing form of art. It's not just about the image. Boudoir photography can be sensual, glamorous, chic, risqué, and whatever you are looking for as a result, it should capture your sensuality, beauty, and bring out the most beautiful you with your emotions in it.

You're overwhelmed with variety of photographers out there, and have no idea how to chose the right one. Perhaps you have found someone, but you are hesitant because he/she isn't in your budget, because of their gender, or any other reason.

First step – What you want?

Since you're looking to have a boudoir photo shoot done, you most likely already have an idea of what you want from a boudoir photo shoot. If not, look for ideas online. Pinterest is an excellent source. You will need to know what you really want before looking for a photographer. Why? Because, depending on what you want your result to look like, you may want a photographer that has specific equipment, or specific studio set up, style, props, etc.

Don't be discouraged if a photographer works on location only, or has a home based studio. As long as you like their work, and are comfortable with this person, a great photographer will produce amazing results in any type of setting. You can always bring your own props too, or discuss with him/her what you'd like in terms of props, backgrounds, etc. and see if they can provide it. Just because it's not in the images in their portfolios, does not mean that they won't provide, or go along with your ideas.

Second step – Looking for a photographer

The internet makes it easy. Search for photographers in your area, but feel free to expand your search radius as many photographers will travel to do a photo shoot, or you don't mind traveling yourself. Don't forget to check on Craigslist, will discuss that more in the third step.

When you're looking through photographer's websites, check out their portfolios, and when you have found someone whose work you like, check their contact info, making sure the information provided is genuine. Check their pricing, if provided or inquire about pricing.

Third step - what is your budget?

As with any service/product you do get what you pay for. If you are comfortable with any pricing, awesome, you don't have to worry about this when choosing a boudoir photographer.

If you are working within a budget, consider checking local listings, on sites such as Craigslist. You may find discounts or even free boudoir photo shoot. Usually this is offered by up and coming new photographers, and they ask in exchange for a release to use the images for their advertising purposes, and to build a portfolio.

This shouldn't discourage you, as long as you have done your homework, and researched them, their website, and you like their work. If they have no samples of boudoir photography look at their portraits and similar samples of work.

Fourth step – Meeting

So, you have narrowed it down to a photographer or two. You should be able to meet with them. If they have a studio that is not home based, you can meet there, otherwise do make sure your initial meeting is at a public place, for obvious safety reasons. This is very important, because meeting with a photographer, you will get a chance to ask questions, and more important you get to see if you would be comfortable to do this very intimate boudoir photo shoot with this person.

Bring a list of questions with you, especially if there is not enough information on their page about what you get, and how the shoot is done. Ask about their experience, the time it takes to do a photo shoot, questions about poses, props, wardrobe changes, and anything else you are curious about. Bring sample photos, and ask about their ability to capture the images like those. How soon you get your photos, and what type of media you get them on. Do you get to see the images, before and after editing and approve them.

Lastly – Things to consider when getting ready for the boudoir photo shoot

You chose the photographer, took your time to research, meet with them, and you are very comfortable and excited about working with this person. Remember, you should be able to bring a friend or a loved one for extra comfort, if that's what you would like.

Consider hiring a hair stylist, and a make up artist to make the most of your boudoir photo shoot. Unless, of course, you are confident in your own abilities to doll yourself up. Also, ask the photographer if they provide these services, or have a recommendation.

Consider that the photographers invests a lot of money in their equipment, and a lot of time in editing, well beyond the photo shoot itself. Consider their expertise, and their artistic touch when you do your research.
